Keeping Young Smiles Safe During Sports
Why Kids Need Mouth Guards for Sports
Wearing a mouth guard is one of the easiest ways to prevent serious dental injuries during sports activities, such as chipped or broken teeth, fractured jaws, and injuries to the lips, tongue, and gums.
While in active orthodontic treatment, patients can use a soft mouth guard that covers the upper arch including the fixed braces and bands. Our suggestion is to purchase a formable appliance that can be reformed as the teeth align. We can help you find a suitable mouth guard to wear over braces in New York.
Custom Fit Under Armour Mouthguards
At Dr. Robert Peracchia, DDS. Central Park West Pediatric Dentistry, we offer the UA ArmourFit™ Mouthguard, designed to provide a secure and comfortable fit. This mouth guard is suitable for athletes with or without braces and can be ordered online or during your office visit.
After completing orthodontic treatment, we recommend a custom-fit mouth guard that conforms exclusively to the shape of your child’s arch. This appliance is ordered from the Under Armour Bite Tech Lab and requires two visits:
- Pre-Fit Visit: We take an impression of the upper arch to create a precise model.
- Fitting Visit: A few weeks later, we ensure the mouth guard fits perfectly and make any necessary adjustments.

Caring for Your Mouth Guard
- Rinse it with cold water before and after each use.
- Clean it regularly with mild soap and a toothbrush.
- Store it in a ventilated container when not in use.
- Avoid exposing it to high temperatures, which can distort its shape.
